Just Ordinary Folks – Robert Schaetzle
But God chose the foolish things of the world to shame the wise; God chose the weak things of the world to shame the strong. 1 Cor 1:27 NIV
Our Lord calls all kinds of people from all walks of life. As I read through the scriptures, I realized when our Lord has a task to be done, He calls people from all different kinds of cultures and occupations. His choices are not dependent upon where one might be from, how smart they are or what their vocational choices might be. He often chooses the least obvious from our viewpoint.
For example, I want to mention a few who were called, not because they attended some ‘school of biblical and rabbinical instruction.’ Most folks do not recognize that Noah and Boaz were farmers. Daniel and Joseph were prime ministers. Gideon, Sampson, and Samuel were judges. David was a shepherd boy and musician. Solomon was a lyric poet. Naaman was a soldier. Jonathan was a warrior. Amos was a shepherd. Matthew was tax collector. Peter, James, and John were fishermen. Dr. Luke was a physician. Lydia was a salesperson. Can you recognize from the very beginning that there never was such a thing as a “Christian” job? When our Lord chooses someone to do what He wants accomplished, the only requirement is to be willing.
God does the equipping to instruct and make us ready for each of His assignments. I feel that when our Lord gave Paul his Damascus Road experience, he sent him into the Arabian Desert for three years, to deprogram him from ‘Pharisee-ism’.
One of our pastors was a high school teacher. Before I became part of my ‘Sharing and Caring’ ministry to preach His promises, I was a U.S. Civil Servant doing some administrative responsibilities, finance, and accounting. My wife was a school teacher, who encouraged me to write and preach for the Lord.
So, no matter how unlikely you think you are, God can use and equip you.
Father, thank you for choosing and equipping those who serve you.
