Jesus Paid the Cost – Robert Schaetzle
“The kingdom of heaven is like treasure hidden in a field, which a man found and covered up. Then in his joy he goes and sells all that he has and buys that field,” (Matthew 13:44 ESV).
Recently, as I was reading about the ‘parable of the hidden treasure’ in Matthew chapter thirteen one morning, it brought something to my attention. Jesus paid the full cost for my redemption. There is nothing I could ever do to earn my salvation, neither should I believe I’d ever have a big enough bank account to finance my way to eternity in paradise.
Some might be led to believe… ‘Unless I pay my monthly tithe, or keep busy in ministry to the point exhaustion, I’ll never enter the kingdom of God.’ Satan will do everything in his power to lie to us. He wants us to stumble into believing ‘I’m not good enough!’
Anyone who ever studied the life of Martin Luther knows he came to recognize this scheme of the devil. Luther realized the futility of earning his salvation by submitting to extreme hardships, believing that the cleansing of sin required some kind of punishing penance. He finally centered himself in the truth by recognizing: “For in it the righteousness of God is revealed from faith for faith, as it is written, “The righteous shall live by faith,” (Romans 1:17 ESV).
Jesus’ redemption does not require us to sell all our possessions in order to find joy and intimacy in His abiding presence—but it will help us recognize all we have belongs to Christ. This knowledge leads us to minister His many blessings to others freely, not out of compulsion. God asks us to be proper stewards of the rich resources He has blessed us with, so the treasures we receive from Him will be used for His glory. May He be first and foremost in all our living.
Remember, our redemption does not require a dollar sign!
