In This World - Marlene Custer
Recent headlines have struck fear in many hearts—‘Pastor Arrested’, ‘Missionaries Kidnapped’, ‘Churches Closed’. For many of us living in countries where Christianity and religion have been protected, this has stirred up considerable anxiety. However, Paul admonished the Christians living in Philippi, “Do not be anxious about anything, but in everything, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God.” Then he promises, “And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding will guard your heart and your minds in Christ Jesus.” (Philippians 4:6-7 NIV)
Jesus Himself warned the disciples “…In this world you will have trouble.”
Following His warning, He encouraged them with these words, “But take heart! I have overcome the world.” (John 16:33 NIV)
So, in days like these, what do we do, how do we cope? First, we must cultivate a relationship with Jesus. “Everyone who calls on the name of the Lord will be saved,” (Acts 2:21 NIV). Then, we must read and study His Word. He will direct our thoughts if we ask. The Lord’s command to Joshua is to us as well, “Be strong and courageous. Do not be terrified; do not be discouraged, for the Lord your God will be with you wherever you go.” (Joshua 1:9 NIV)
Paul’s words to the Corinthians are as true today as well as then. “Therefore we do not lose heart...For our light and momentary troubles are achieving for us eternal glory that far outweighs them all,” (2 Corinthians 4:16-17 NIV). Our few years here pale in comparison with eternity.
Prayer, “Jesus, please calm my troubled heart. Help me stay focused on you and those things that are of eternal value. Amen.”
