I Felt Hated – Ken Ebright
“For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life.” (John 3:16 NIV)
In our lives, sadly, we're not going to get along with everybody. There have been people in my life that I sensed hated me. For instance, I worked with someone who I will refer to as Maggie. We worked together at a cable company, and just never got along for some reason. The way I was treated by her, it felt like she hated me.
Another person whom I will refer to as Bart was my assistant on the job. Sometimes we would be very busy and sometimes things would be really slow. When we were busy, we would get along, but when things were slow, we fought.
Additionally, I was a volunteer sound operator for a church. I would run sound once a month. Prior to the service, I would call the worship leader and find out how many singers there were going to be for the service. I wanted to be professional by trying to do my job well, but I felt hated for it.
The depiction of these people is a negative one, but we need to remember that Jesus created all of us — and we have all sinned. The very reason hate exists is because sin is in this world. I am no better than anyone and my sins are no less offensive to God than the sins of others. I need to remember that Jesus died on the cross for all of our sins, even for those who might appear to be our enemies. Like the verse says, whoever believes in him will not be lost (“shall not perish”) but will have eternal life. God loves us all, and that is why Jesus was crucified on the cross, dying for our sins and rising for our justification. He will never hate us and he calls us to love others, even those who may hate us, as He has loved us.
