How Will They Know? – Marlene Custer

Do you sometimes feel under attack for your faith? ‘How can you be a Christian and believe this or do that?’ is the accusation. Whether the subject is abortion, gun laws, or food shortages, Christians are blamed – labeled as hypocrites while having their motives questioned. Social media keeps the animosity and division well-fueled. How should one respond? What identifies a true Christian?

Jesus answered this question while talking with His disciples. “By this all men will know that you are my disciples, if you love one another.” (John 13:35 NIV). If we have questions about what He meant, the Apostle Paul informs us in his letter to the Corinthians. He wrote if you love you will be kind, patient, not rude or easily angered. Love cares for the weak and needy. It does not delight in evil but always protects. Do those making accusations display these qualities? Do those speaking so loudly against abortion do anything to help the poor? Do those advocating for stronger gun laws reach out to troubled youth?

Sometimes the best response is no response to those that would argue or challenge us. Jesus knew His servants would face challenges in the world.

“Blessed are you when people insult you, persecute you and falsely say all kinds of evil against you because of me. Rejoice and be glad, because great is your reward in heaven…” (Matthew 5:11-12 NIV).

“Jesus, I love you and want to represent you well. Help me to love those around me as is taught in Your Word. Help me to always remember that my actions often speak much louder than mere words. Thank you!”
