Holier Than Thou – Lakella L. Davenport
Romans 12:16 KJV, “Be of the same mind one toward another. Mind not high things, but condescend to men of low estate. Be not wise in your own conceits.”
We must not have the mindset that we’re too holy to help someone caught up in sin, or those who appear to have less faith or be less spiritual than we are. Jesus, God incarnate, didn’t have a ‘holier than thou’ attitude. He even said: “Why callest thou me good? There is none good but one, that is God: but if thou wilt enter into life, keep the commandments,” (Matthew 19:17 KJV).
Furthermore, Jesus ate with the Pharisees. “And one of the Pharisees desired him that he would eat with him. And he went into the Pharisee's house and sat down to meat,” (Luke 7:36 KJV). On another occasion, Jesus ate with publicans and sinners. The Pharisees objected but Jesus said to them “They that be whole need not a physician, but they that are sick. But go ye and learn what that meaneth, I will have mercy, and not sacrifice, for I am not come to call the righteous, but sinners to repentance,” (Matthew 9:12-13 KJV).
We must follow Jesus’ example and not judge others, placing ourselves above them in our thoughts. Like Jesus said, we are called to serve our fellow brothers and sisters, to wash one another's feet. True Godly love is full of grace and mercy. We must do as Ephesians 4:29-32 KJV tells us to do: “Let no corrupt communication proceed out of your mouth but that which is good to the use of edifying, that it may minister grace unto the hearers.” “And be ye kind to one another, tenderhearted, forgiving one another, even as God for Christ's sake hath forgiven you,” Ephesians 4:32 KJV.
Father God, I pray that we learn to think soberly of ourselves and our fellow brothers and sisters. I pray that we are quick to show mercy and forgiveness, rather than judgment toward both believers and non-believers of your Holy Word.
