He Who Created Us, Saves Us - Robert Schaetzle
“He saved us, not because of deeds done by us in righteousness, but in virtue of his own mercy, by the washing of regeneration and renewal in the Holy Spirit,” (Titus 3:5 RSV).
How special it is to recognize; in biblical Christianity, God reaches down to man to establish a relationship with us, in spite of our sin-filled nature. In all other religions, mankind must gain merit— in other words, he must work for what Christ alone accomplished for us on the cross.
The bible teaches that God, by his own design, so loved mankind that in spite of our sins, he chose to bridge the gap between God and man through His Son Jesus Christ. God’s mercy resulted in man not having to suffer what Christ suffered for us on the cross. As believers in Jesus, we don’t suffer the punishment we deserve but receive the blessing and forgiveness we don’t deserve.
A story is told of a religious leader who was about to board a train when a man approached him and asked if he was ‘saved’. The religious leader replied, “I was saved in the year 33 AD when Jesus died on the cross for my sins.” Now it's true most who are followers of Jesus can point to a particular circumstance or time when they believed and received Jesus into their lives. But consider the real truth of the matter. This religious leader waiting to board a train gave an answer that is correct for us all, who claim Jesus, because the salvation we accept and appropriate to ourselves as believers is a work that has already been done.
Father, thank you for this day, two thousand plus years ago when Jesus became my Creator and Redeemer. He became my atonement on the cross, once for all, put to death in the flesh but made alive in the Spirit. AMEN
