BE STILL!!!... by James Cox

He says, “Be still, and know that I am God...(Psalm 46:10)

I remember summer thunderstorms from my childhood; huge, angry clouds, heavy with enough raindrops to flood the earth again. One second we’re playing in my grandparents’ yard and the next; we were rushed indoors, snatched from the joys of summer for what we thought was no reason at all.

The storm hit; lightening flashed, the clouds rolled and then… BOOM!!! THUNDER! In the darkness of mid-day, Grandma gave one order:“Stop runnin’, skippin’ and hoppin’, SIT down and BE STILL and watch the Good Lord do His work!” she said.

And while the rain was getting dumped on our house, my brother and I did what we were told; we sat still and read books or listened to Grandma hum softly, while Grandaddy slowly rocked in his chair, a quiet smile on his face and peace in his heart. But how often in the Word does the Lord say “be still”? He did while He slept in the boat with His disciples (Mark 4:39), He did while inspiring David to write Psalm 46:10, and He did through Moses in Exodus 14:13. Being still in the Bible is always linked to GOD doing something on our behalf.

Being still means we stop “running” trying to fix problems ourselves; when the bills are overdue, when the spouse has said they don’t love you anymore; being still means letting go and LETTING GOD. ALL we need to do is take a look “in the boat” and see who’s lying there asleep!!

The Lord uses the storms of life, it’s only clear when we are quiet and calm. And what joy, blessings and strength come from watching GOD do His Work, while being still. Amen.
