Determined Steps – by Sharon Dow In his heart a man plans his course, but the Lord determines his steps. (Proverbs 16:9 NIV) I recently had occasion to look back over my life as I prepared a topic for a speaking engagement. I was amazed at how many times over the course of my years that I had made decisions but was then turned away from those decisions. In Grade 12 I decided to write the entrance exam to enter a well-known university to study to be a concert pianist. When the day of the exam arrived, I simply did not go to the exam. I did not make a conscious decision not to go, nor did I forget. I just did not go and thus a simple decision in Grade 12 to enter the field of education rather than that of a professional musician, totally changed the direction of my life! I would never have met my husband who has been my loving partner for many years; we would not have had our three wonderful sons and their families, and I would not be writing this devotional today. I often look at one of my children or grandchildren and I can’t imagine life without them. When you’re faced with disappointment because a decision you made did not work out as planned, remember that you may plan your course, but God will determine your steps. Your re-direction may be from God and will produce results beyond your greatest expectation. Let him surprise you with the amazing plan he has for your life. Rejoice in your failures because they may simply be God’s re-direction in your life. Today’s Christian writer is a retired educator and author of three Christian Historical Fiction books.
