An Evil Heart of Unbelief – by Toni Babcock The Bible exhorts us to "Take heed, brethren, lest there be in any of you an evil heart of unbelief, in departing from the living God," (Hebrews 3:12 KJV). What does unbelief do? Unbelief draws a soul away from the redemptive power and saving grace of the living God. It leaves the soul restless and rootless. What makes it so insidious is it has the power to pervert the gospel, condemn the righteous, and convince souls just beginning to understand the truth to turn back to the "weak and beggarly elements" that held them in spiritual bondage for so long (Galatians 4:9 KJV). It is Satan's response to Jesus, the Fountain of Life, and it is the fountain of every unbelieving sin a human being might manifest. We are exhorted by God's word therefore, to "take heed" lest there be in any one of us an "evil heart of unbelief." An evil heart of unbelief can also be very religious. Consider the religious rulers that condemned Jesus in His day. They appeared jealous of Jesus, and feared His power over the hearts and minds of the people. They condemned Him of blasphemy, and accused Him of having a demon! That is the power of unbelief in all its madness. See how it stops the ears, blinds the eyes, and closes the mind to the truth. No wonder it is considered the chief of sins. Note once more the warning in the book of Hebrews: "Take heed, brethren, lest there be in any of you an evil heart of unbelief." Yes, unbelief may worm its unbelieving way into any one of our hearts. Let us heed the warning for ourselves. Lord save us from an evil heart of unbelief!
