Driven By Hunger – by Tom Parsons

"The appetite of laborers works for them; their hunger drives them on." – Proverbs 16:26 NIV

With his usual sharp perspective and efficient word usage, Solomon sums up the situation of the laborer. His appetite works for him and he is driven on by the fact that he and his family have a hunger that needs to be satisfied every day. Quite literally, if he doesn’t work, he doesn’t eat (2 Thessalonians 3:10). He may not feel like going to work on a particular day, but if he chooses to ignore work and to spend the day as he pleases, the table will eventually be bare.

As a freelance writer, I am learning the art of disciplining my time so that I can minister to others and, hopefully, receive payments for my work. This is not easy. There are so many other things that attract my attention. But my hunger for using whatever talents God has given me spurs me on to focus on my writing.

A similar thing could be said about our walk with Jesus Christ. A hunger to know Him better should spur us on to spend time in His Word and in prayer with Him regularly. Our hunger to have others come to know this Savior who gave His life for sinners should spur us on to live and speak – and write – so that others will want to know Him.

Like Solomon says, "our hunger drives us on" to please Him.
