| | | | | God’s Book of Tears – Cheryl Weber
Life can be brutal. Suffering, injustice, loss, and pain can cause us to cry out in anguish, sometimes weeping until we feel we have no tears left.
The Biblical character David endured much pain. Throughout a significant part of his life, violent enemies pursued him: crazed King Saul, the Philistines, and sadly, his son Absolom who attempted to take the throne from his own father. Absolom died instead by the hand of one of David’s army generals. David mourned deeply despite the harm his son had meant to do him. “Oh my son, my son Absolom. If only I’d died in your place! Oh, Absolom, my son.”
Years earlier, after David had fled to enemy territory to escape jealous King Saul, he found himself threatened by the very ones to whom he’d run for refuge. His response to the situation is found in Psalms 56. He cries out to God for help, acknowledging his fear and distress, yet determines to trust God’s faithfulness, power, and justice. In verse 8 he says, “You keep track of all my sorrows. You have collected all my tears in your bottle. You have recorded each one in your book.” NLT
David’s words reflect a custom practiced by the ancient Greeks and Romans; tears shed for the death of any person were placed into small phials and offered on the tomb of the deceased. David understood the tenderness of God in the midst of his suffering and sorrow, an understanding that formed a solid foundation for enduring the trials he would face in the future, including the consequences of his own sins.
God does not minimize or ignore even one detail of our suffering, even that which results from our own poor choices. In his tender compassion, he weeps with us, taking note of each tear. In his everlasting love and because of his good purposes for us, he never forsakes us, constantly watching over us, comforting, and providing for us. And as we submit to him, he leads us out of our valleys and into hope and healing.
