“A strong and heavy wind was rending the mountains and crushing rocks before the Lord—but the Lord was not in the wind. After the wind there was an earthquake—but the Lord was not in the earthquake. After the earthquake there was fire—but the Lord was not in the fire…” 1 Kings 20: 11-12 NAB
Extraordinary events, for sure, but Elijah did not find the Lord in any of these as he expected. The Lord had clearly instructed him to go outside and stand on the mountain because He would be passing by. The Word tells us Elijah was zealous for the Lord, pursuing a desperate search. “After the fire there was a tiny whispering sound.” (1 Kings 20:12) God was found in the quiet, in the ordinary.
Don’t solely search for God in the extraordinary, though He inhabits all places. Very rare is the burning bush of Moses, or the Damascus moments of Paul. The ordinary—it’s where we live most of our lives. In the normal routines of Mondays through Fridays. Sleepy Saturdays. Sacred Sundays. He is as near as a prayer, softened by our cries. “Draw near to God and He will draw near to you.” (James 4:8) He is faithful to come. He is faithful to hear. “When the just cry out, the Lord hears and rescues them from their distress.” (Psalm 34:18)
Sometimes we don’t know the “what” or “why” of what we are walking through. We are desperate for His presence and His Voice. God’s “what” and “why” often comes after the chaos; we learn the lesson when peace once again settles in our soul. Be alert for the still small voice that anchors you once again. Meet God in the ordinary.
After the fire, Lord, let me hear a tiny whispering sound. Amen.
