Give Them a Choice – Jane H. Young
When I grew up, most children went to Sunday school. But I don’t think that is true today. In fact, I would say many children today haven’t even seen the inside of a church, let alone gone to Sunday school. This saddens me in so many ways. Take the scripture below for instance—how can kids today relate to this:
“My son, observe the commandment of your father, And do not forsake the teaching of your mother; Bind them continually on your heart; Tie them around your neck. When you walk about, they will guide you; When you sleep, they will watch over you; And when you awake, they will talk to you.” Proverbs 6:20-22 NASB
Let’s look at what it is saying. Obey the commandment of your father; they could still do that today, right? But what would a command of a father look like to a child that hasn’t been in church?
Don’t forsake the teaching of your mother; let’s hope the teachings are good because the next thing that child is supposed to do is bind their mother’s teaching continually in their heart. Those teachings should be peace that watches over them as they fall asleep, and when they are awake those teachings are supposed to help guide them through each day of their lives.
Parents, grandparents, aunts, uncles, and teachers – please take this Scripture seriously. Our young people need God’s Word planted in their hearts. If they are not taught there is a way of life other than what this world has to offer them, then where do they turn in times of trouble?
We need to teach them they can call on God—always—no matter what. If you were blessed to grow up going to church, you’ve always known this scripture to be true:
“In my trouble I cried to the Lord, And He answered me.” Psalm 120:1 NASB
We owe it to our children to let them grow up with that same assurance.
