From Despondence to Deliverance Toni M. Babcock
In anxious times, it’s helpful to learn from the example of the saints of old. How did they deal with fear and anxiety? By reading many of the Psalms in the Old Testament we catch a glimpse. Take Psalm 13 for example. King David begins on a doleful, despairing note, and ends up on a triumphant note. Four practices are employed to achieve this: trust, joy, thankfulness, and praise.
The psalm reads: “How long, LORD? Will you forget me forever? How long will you hide your face from me? How long will I store up anxious concerns within me, agony in my mind every day? How long will my enemy dominate me? Consider me and answer; LORD my God. Restore brightness to my eyes; otherwise I will sleep in death. My enemy will say, “I have triumphed over him,” and my foes will rejoice because I am shaken. But I have trusted in your faithful love; my heart will rejoice in your deliverance. I will sing to the LORD because he has treated me generously.” (Psalm 13 CSB).
David rose above his faulty feelings—his greatest concern being his enemies would rejoice over him and his God if he didn’t. Perhaps he remembered it was faith that gave him the courage to stand against Goliath in the valley of Elah and say, “Just who is this uncircumcised Philistine that he should defy the armies of the living God?” (1 Samuel 17:26b CSB).
How do we respond when threatened by our ‘giants’? Like David, let’s respond by exalting God. Let’s be a testimony to His saving grace. Satan wants the world to see us disheartened, defeated, and depressed, even when we’ve been given all the tools we need to overcome. Will we rise above our faulty feelings, which in essence defy the living God? Will we instead employ the tools of trust, joy, thankfulness and praise?
