Luke 10: 41-42, And Jesus answered and said to her, "Martha, Martha, you are worried and troubled about many things. But one thing is needed, and Mary has chosen that good part, which will not be taken away from her."
Yesterday I noticed a swarm of people over at my neighbor’s home. They were laughing, eating and seemed to be having a grand time. Two widowed sisters live there. In my observance of what was happening I immediately thought of Mary and Martha in the above passage from Luke.
Across the road in the midst of the gathering, the elder sister sat with her Bible firmly in her weathered hand while the younger widow was immersed in family and the food being served.
In Luke’s narrative, Martha was busy with the preparations for the guests while Mary sat by the feet of Jesus taking in His presence, learning and listening. Well, here was a similar circumstance with these two sisters.
It was Mary that had Jesus’ favor, for she wasn’t distracted by the world, or encumbered by her duties. Mary’s highest priority was Jesus. Martha on the other hand, was distracted from what should have been her most treasured and highest priority, the LORD Jesus Christ. Of course, friends, gatherings and entertaining are all well and good. It’s when we turn from God totally and enjoy all else without Him is to what I am referring.
When we divert our attention from God by taking our eyes off Him, trouble will invariably enter into our lives. It’s when we lose focus on Him, and stray from His Word, that our situations can abruptly explode creating chaos in our lives. When we let go of our purpose and focus of God, we can get sucked into self-condemnation, depression, or going off on a pity-pot of woe is me.
Troubled? Something missing in your life? Sit at His feet and worship Him. Believe in Him fully and bask in His glorious light.
“Father, I adore You. May I never lose sight of what is most important in my life, and that is You, in Jesus’ name, Amen.
