It’s almost Christmas. Anybody frazzled yet? I felt the frazzle coming on fast when I stood staring in the baking isle, postulating between the aluminum cupcake pans with clear plastic lids versus the aluminum cake pans with red plastic lids I’d already purchased (they were sitting on a shelf at home.) I stared into space and became paralyzed by indecision. Time stood still while my brain bounced from one set of pans to the other. ‘I’ll waste around seven Christmas bucks if I make a switch from one set of pans to the other' I lamented. The idea of wasting a few Christmas bucks snapped me out of it.
If it takes that long to make a shopping decision at Christmas, we’re probably not supposed to get whatever it is we’re fixated on. Meanwhile, the real ‘reason for the season’ can be entirely lost in the frenzy to ‘make for ourselves a Merry little Christmas’. Have you ever noticed how easy it is to get fixated on what doesn’t really matter while neglecting what absolutely does? I wonder what Jesus thinks about all this holiday madness?
Let’s make it a point to fix our eyes on Jesus — especially at Christmas — fixed on the One who was born in a manger, but who now sits at the right hand of the throne of God on high — our Advocate and Friend. Are we giving Him the honor due his name? All the other holiday things that seem to scream for our attention simply need to fade in their importance as we focus our worship and our attention on Him.
