First Things First - Karen Pourbabaee
“Find your delight in the Lord, who will give you your heart’s desire.” Psalm 37: 4 NAB
There is an order in the realm of spiritual things. First things first--the progression of a blessed life must begin with delight in the Lord. A showing of love and adoration to the God who created you, not just because, but for a very specific purpose. Your life matters in God’s eyes! In fact, this verse continues by saying God gives you the specific desires in your heart; they will focus and drive your life in the direction He has planned. You are really on a mission—His mission, not yours. Therefore, how can you not place this gift of life in His hands?
“Commit your way to the Lord; trust that God will act.” (Psalm 37:5) It is wisdom to place your life and your ways in God’s control. What plan, problem, or challenge do you need to commit to God today? What fears, worries, or uncertainties are better left in His hands? Commit and trust—then leave it to the Lord.
“Be still before the Lord; wait for God.” (Psalm 37:7) That definitive act of committing and trusting will allow you to rest before the Lord. Your burden will be lifted and shared—you and the Lord are in it together. You are not alone. In this infilling of hope, you are then able to wait peacefully, patiently.
Psalm 37 continues with the promises bestowed whenever we delight, commit, trust, rest, and wait:
“The Lord will sustain the righteous.” (v.17)
“May stumble, but will never fall, for the Lord holds his hand,” (v.24)
“The Lord…does not abandon the faithful.” (v.28)
Follow this rewarding recipe. Put in the right ingredients, following the God-given desires of your heart. Commit and walk in His way. At the end of each course, you will find yourself in God’s will. And at the end of your journey, you will meet Him at the heavenly banquet. Amen.
