Feed My Sheep – Jennifer Woodley
'A second time he said to him, “Simon son of John, do you love me more than these?” He said to him, “Yes, Lord; you know that I love you.” Jesus said to him, “Feed my sheep.” John 21:16 (NRSV)
There comes a time when all our learning about Christ, all our pouring over Scripture and the deep, life-giving work the Spirit is doing in our heart needs to be shared with others. No longer can we be lamps hidden away under a basket. Our light and understanding about Christ and the love we have for Him, must be shared with others. We are called, just as Simon Peter was, to feed His sheep.
And that will look different for every follower of Christ. We are not Simon Peter, a fisherman living in New Testament times, but rather students, parents, factory workers, homeworkers and more, living in varied 21st Century contexts and situations. Regardless of place and calling, Jesus invites us to show our love for Him by feeding His sheep. That may mean giving up our rights, desires, time, energy and in some cases, our very lives. Those who love Him much, are willing to give much.
Do we really love our Lord? Then let us ask Him earnestly where and how we can tend to His flock. Know that He will lead us to give lovingly, sacrificially and in an intentional way that meets genuine need. Do not compare, question or underestimate what the Lord says, just obey.
Let's give wholeheartedly, believing that our labour for Him is not in vain, but will, in due time, reap a plentiful reward.
