The Refiner’s Fire – Jennifer Woodley
“Our God, whom we serve, is able to deliver us from the furnace of blazing fire … but if not, be it known to you, that we will not serve your gods” Daniel 3:17-18 (NRSV).
The purpose of the Refiner’s Fire is to burn away all the bondage that the world imposes upon us. That is, the spirit of this world that is opposed to all God represents.
Just as Satan would have us worship first the temporal things of this world, so too did Nebuchadnezzar demand that the three Hebrew men bow down to worship him. But in allegiance to God, they neither obeyed nor surrendered to the king’s edict.
Even as God did not spare His own Son the pains and sufferings of the cross, so too God will not spare us any pain in bringing us to that ultimate state of Christlikeness (Hebrews 12:6-7). The Refiner’s Fire is the instrument by which God accomplishes this purpose in our lives. And we are to allow God to use whatever instrument or tool He chooses to transform us into Christlikeness.
God is holy and nothing impure, nothing from this world, nothing contrary to His nature will He tolerate in His people. The Refiner’s Fire will burn all that is untasteful to the Lord from our lives. It burns out the impurities and brings us to a state of purification. The more intense the flame we experience, the purer in His sight we will become. What does it take to become pure in God’s sight? It takes a furnace. It takes obedience. It takes surrender. How well are we faithfully submitting to the situations He uses to refine us?
