What’s in a Name? – by Michael Edwards
"This is the book of the generations of Adam. When God created man, he made him in the likeness of God."" (Genesis 5:1 ESV)
We all know that names have meanings, and many of us have looked up the meaning of our own name. For example, Adam means man. Recently, I heard of a devout Jew coming to Christ after being led by God to read the meaning of the names in the generations of Adam to Noah found in Genesis, chapter five.
The genealogy lists the generations as: Adam, Seth, Enosh, Kenan, Mahalaleel, Jared, Enoch, Methuselah, Lamech, and Noah. Now, logically, God would be before Adam, and in fact, Luke 3:38 lists Adam as a son of God, so in the above list, before Adam, would be God.
Now let’s look at the meaning of each name in order. God means The God, Adam means Man, Seth means appointed, Enosh means a mortal man of, Kenan means sorrow, Mahalalel means the glory of God, Jared means shall come down, Enoch means instructing that, Methuselah means his death shall bring, Lamech means those in despair, Noah means comfort and rest.
Amazingly here is what happens when we string the meanings together in order: The God man is appointed a mortal man of sorrow; the Glory of God shall come down, instructing that His death shall bring those in despair comfort and rest.
