What Are You Training For? – by Abby Kelly

“Physical training is good, but training for godliness is much better, promising benefits in this life and in the life to come.” 1 Timothy 4:8

Where I live, summer has attacked in full force—sunburn blisters, spontaneous showers and steamy sidewalks. Everyone is pulling out their swimsuits, slipping on their sandals, tying up their shirts and showing some skin—it’s hot out there!

In our culture, appearance is very important. That’s why gyms are crowded and marathons are popular. Most everyone has something to say about their workout plan or plan to workout. Keeping our bodies in shape is important. Indeed, our bodies are the temple of the Holy Spirit, we are not our own, Christ paid for us and we must honor Him with our bodies. But, even more than our physical health, we honor God by keeping our spirit healthy.

Just like our physical bodies, our spirits need training and discipline. 1 Timothy 4:8 says, “Physical training is good, but training for godliness is much better, promising benefits in this life and in the life to come.”

How do we train for godliness? Paul gives us the answer to that question too. All Scripture is breathed out by God and profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction, and for training in righteousness,” 2 Timothy 3:16.

To be healthy, strong, growing sons and daughters of God, we must train for godliness, this starts with knowing God, and that starts by being in His Word.
