Whatever is True - by Sharon Dow “Finally, brothers, whatever is true, whatever is noble, whatever is right, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is admirable – if anything is excellent or praiseworthy – think about such things.” (Philippians 4:8 NIV) This verse often circles through my mind. What great advice, but how often do I follow it? The first one is TRUE. What do I know for certain is true? We live in an age when truth is not as important as it once was. In the physical world, I know that because the sun sets each evening, it will rise the next morning. I know that because the tide comes in, it will go out. I know that because a baby is born, it will one day die. These are truths in our current age. When I think of these things I marvel. Although not perceived as spiritual by a vast majority of people, they are spiritual because God is behind each of these seemingly physical events. As creator God, he set these things in motion, and they will continue until he sees fit to change them. People fail us. We fail others. I want to believe that I always speak the truth, but are there times when my truth is tailored to make me look good? Or to relieve me of guilt in a situation? So does truth even exist outside of the spiritual? Probably not. We, as humans, even when we attempt to always speak the truth, can colour our words, omit some, and what we deliver may not be pure truth. So, in the end, truth is a spiritual thing.
