Where are you going to spend Eternity? - by Keith Henry “Not so with you. Instead, whoever wants to become great among you must be your servant, and whoever wants to be first must be your slave; Just as the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give His life as a ransom for many.” (Matthew 20:26 –28 NIV) I am often thrown to the mat because of the seemingly arrogant message of my ministry, Hyperspirituality. When asked, “Where are you going to spend eternity?” many Christians answer, “in Heaven”. The Hyperspiritual Christian answers, “Right next to Jesus.” The Bible speaks of rewards in Heaven, crowns to be won, and suggest that there is something more than just milling around Heaven for all eternity. The mother of the sons of Zebedee arrogantly understood this as well and approached Jesus with a request, “Grant that one of these two sons of mine may sit at your right and the other to the left in your kingdom.” (Matthew 20:21 NIV) Notice that Jesus did not rebuke her or her sons for making such a request, but instead He instructed them on the proper approach for becoming “great” in the kingdom of heaven; “Whoever wants to become great among you must be your servant, and whoever wants to be first must be your slave.” The word “whoever” suggests that this is not for every Christian and that is fine, but should you desire to spend eternity “Right next to Jesus” you might want to start with practicing what I call the Discipline of Humility. Become a “slave” so that you might “become first”; to “become great” first learn to become a “servant. So where are you going to spend eternity?
