Super Bowl XLVIII by Anna Darlene Edmondson “And the devil that deceived them was cast into the lake of fire and brimstone… and shall be tormented day and night for ever and ever” (Revelation 20:10 KJV). Growing up in East Tennessee, I watched lots of (University of Tennessee) football games. When they won, I won. No, I didn’t wear a uniform with helmet, cleats, shoulder pads, etc. Heck, I never even showed up for practice–wasn’t happening! However, I aligned myself with the team as though I was an important member. They did excruciating yearlong labor, and I reaped the benefits. Archie Manning’s son, Peyton, played for UT from 1994-98. Next Sunday, Peyton, the Denver Broncos quarterback, hopes to win the championship. Fighting started in the Garden of Eden. All kinds of wars, warfare and battles happen every day. Methods for military force vary and besieging a city in Old Testament times required elaborate planning. A certain combat took place during King Saul’s reign with an enormous man challenging his army. For forty days the giant yelled, taunting Israel’s soldiers to find one man willing to engage in hand-to-hand combat. The winner of that one battle would determine the outcome of the war. The young shepherd boy accepted the dare, felling Goliath with a single stone to the forehead from his sling. Israel 1, Philistines 0. Although only David, soon to be Israel’s next ruler, fought and won; he represented the whole nation. In another garden (Gethsemane), Jesus faced his strongest temptation. Looking from above, that dark night, angels watched Satan’s onslaught; weaving his blackest magic against God’s son. Jesus made it through, bringing us with Him. Because He defeated Satan, so did we. Yes, the old “wormwood” still lurks around; but “greater is He that’s in us, than he that’s in the world.” (1 John 4:4b KJV) Darlene enjoys a quiet life in rural southern Georgia USA.
