Jesus' Light in Trials by Dave Walker "THE LIGHT SHINES IN THE DARKNESS, BUT THE DARKNESS HAS NOT UNDERSTOOD IT" (JOHN 1:5 NIV) Jesus, in dying for our sins, remarkably, made it possible for us sinners to have a loving relationship with a holy God. Today, as then, there are scoffers -- self-righteous people who don't understand their need. I confess I was one. Like the Jews in Jesus' day, I was complacent. As a 'good person' I expected God to be there when I needed him, without desiring any relationship with Him. The light shone in my particular darkness, but I didn't understand it -- I didn't even realise it was dark! It took my brother's tragic death and many hard questions, to "see the light." I realised Jesus made the Father's love available to me even in the midst of heartache -- abundant life does not mean an easy, incident-free life. Rather, it's experiencing the Father's love in all circumstances, even the hard ones. If you're wondering where God is in your trial, He's with you and will take you through, if you'll allow Him to love you in it. God says much in His Word about the blessings that follow perseverance in trial. Scott Wesley Brown sings: "When answers aren't enough, there is Jesus." Cling to Him at all costs and His light will shine in your darkness. Lord Jesus, thank You for making a way into the very throne room of the Father. Help me to allow You to live your life in me -- to carry me through my circumstances. Amen Dave is a retired anaesthesiologist.
