The Gift that Grows - by Karen Pourbabaee “For those whom the Lord loves He disciplines…” Hebrews 12:6 NAS
Though it probably never feels like it, discipline is a gift. A gift born of the Father’s love, one to be accepted readily. A little wisdom from Proverbs 3:11 advises us, “My son, do not reject the discipline of the Lord.” For it is a gift that grows if we only persevere. Discipline is a sign of Love that gives and a fruit of the Spirit that grows. (Galatians 5:22/self-control) We are to earnestly receive it and pursue it!
Furthermore, 2 Peter 1:5-6 instructs us to”…make every effort to supplement…self-control with perseverance…” Discipline or self-control can only grow by endurance. Prepare for the long haul. Discipline is not an easy road. Discipline is not merely self-will, which fizzles out after a time. Remember it’s first of all a gift of the Father… a seed He plants within our spirits that we may grow by endurance. We endure by His grace, constantly submitting ourselves to the voice of His Spirit that beckons us to keep on. The road ahead may not be clear, in fact it may harbor obstacles, distractions, even detours. But we are called to endurance. Why?
“And let endurance have its perfect result, that you may be perfect and complete, lacking in nothing.” (James 1:4) God has a greater vision for us than we could even imagine. He wills us to spiritual maturity via discipline. Never think your decision to exercise discipline in any area is your own idea, for it flows from the loving heart of your Father and His grand plan for your life.
