One Man’s …… By Michael Edwards How many sins did you need to commit to be a sinner? Most would say one, but this is not what the Bible teaches. “For as by the one man’s disobedience (Adam) the many were made sinners….” (Rom 5:19a ESV) According to Paul, my sinful actions did not make me a sinner, my inherited sinful nature made me sin. “Therefore as one trespass (Adam) led to condemnation for all men…(Rom 5:18a ESV)
Jesus is also called the second Adam. Thus it is written, “The first man Adam became a living being”; the last Adam became a life-giving spirit. (1 Cor 15:45 ESV) Jesus virgin birth was essential so that he would not inherit Adams nature.
Jesus did what Adam failed to do. “so one act of righteousness (Jesus) leads to justification and life for all men.” (Rom 5:18b) …so by the one man’s obedience (Jesus) the many will be made righteous. (Rom 5:19b ESV) So how do we become righteous in God’s eyes, in other words right with God? “…You must be born again.” (John 3:7 ESV)
Why? To inherit Jesus sinless nature thus replacing the nature we inherited from Adam. Can we lose it? Could you lose your inherited sinful nature?
