Return Fire With The Word Ennis Smith Then Jesus said to him, “Be gone, Satan! For it is written, ‘You shall worship the Lord your God and him only shall you serve.’” Matthew 4:10 (ESV)
The devil really knows how to intimidate us. He waits for a time when our faith is under fire, then strikes mercilessly. After fasting for forty days and forty nights, Jesus was hungry. It was then, that the devil seized the opportunity to strike out at our Lord. But Jesus knew how to fight back, even in his weakened state: he relied on the word of God.
In our culture today, we are burdened with all sorts of frustrating realities from monthly bills to stressful work conditions. Maybe your burden is a quest to determine your destiny. Perhaps you’re burdened by a health issue. Whatever your specific situation is, you can be sure that Satan has a tailor made lie ready to throw your way.
“If I just had more money, the problem would go away.”
“Maybe I should quit this job, and take a break for a few months.”
“I’m sick of waiting on God to tell me where I belong. I’ll figure it out on my own.”
Jesus didn’t fall for Satan’s traps. He rebuked him by using the word. That’s precisely what we should do: remember the word. The next time Satan intimidates you, fire back by proclaiming the truth written throughout the bible.
