The War Horse – by Toni Babcock
“…Ye shall know the truth and the truth shall make you free,” (John 8:32 KJV).
In the movie War Horse, a gallant horse becomes tangled in long rolls of barbed wire that separate two enemies, until one soldier is daring enough to step out and set him free. Jesus is that soldier, and His gospel is like the war horse. Sometimes as people who proclaim the gospel, we find ourselves on opposing sides. We put up our barricades. We allow the gospel of Christ to get all tangled up in the barbed wire of our fears, our prejudice, and our peculiar religious dogmas—like the fallen war horse caught in the wire. When we are tangled up in this way, we begin to oppose one another, suspect one another, doubt one another, and resist one another. We may attempt to shoot one another down with words, and then retreat behind our safe bunkers. In doing so, we forget what a Christian's true mission is in God’s kingdom. It is not to prove we are right to the people who oppose us, it is to set people free.
Knowing the truth of the gospel, and living the truth of the gospel allows Jesus to untangle the truth within us - the truth that sets people free. Only then we can go in the strength of the Lord God and allow Jesus to win.
