Snooze Control -by Lillian Rhoades

“It’s vain for you to rise up early, to sit up late, to eat the bread of sorrows; For so He giveth His Beloved sleep” (Psalms 127: 2 NKJ).

There are times when sleep wants to play hide and seek. It usually happens after a stressful day just as we’re poised to hit the snooze button. One night, after a day when nothing seemed to go right, I tried to click off my problems when I flicked off the light. But for more time than I want to admit, I lay in bed with eyes closed but mind wide awake. It looked as if the troubling issues of the day were going to be my bedfellows for the night.

Was this going to be one of those nightlong, toss and turn, mind churning, nocturnal adventures? “Not tonight, Lord,” I pleaded. “Not tonight.” From somewhere deep inside, a voice spoke to my “write brain” side and a little couplet emerged.

“I can handle it best,
Just accept My rest.

The words reminded me of a conversation I’d had many years ago with a member of my church. I can’t recall how the topic of sleepless nights came up, but I still remember her sunny solution to the problem. “Oh honey, the Bible tells me that God neither slumbers nor sleeps, so I just turn my problems over to Him. There’s no need for both of us to stay awake.” I was immensely impressed that she had found the best way to keep her cares at bay during the night.

If you’re wrestling with the leftovers from a problem-filled day and find it hard to sleep, the One Who never sleeps offers rest to you, His Beloved. Accept it.
