“His Name was Legion” by Phyllis Inniss

‘Jesus then asked him, “What is your name?” And he said, “Legion”, for many demons had entered him.”’ (Luke 8:30 ESV)

Christ, the Supreme Power, had dominion and authority to subdue, eradicate, annihilate or destroy all evil. The demoniac, like the other demons in the Bible, recognized Jesus as the Son of God. They were afraid of His presence and would cry out, “What have you to do with us Jesus, Son of the Most High God?” (Luke 8:28). The self-centredness and self-righteousness of the Chief Priests and Scribes blinded them from seeing that Divine Nature and obscured their vision of all the good that he was accomplishing for the Jews in their midst. “He came unto His own and His own received Him not.” (John 1:11). The Pharisee boasted that he was unlike other men, giving tithes, but the lowly Publican, keeping his eyes lowered, beat his chest and asked forgiveness for being a sinner (Luke 18:13).

We can get rid of our demons by recognizing that Jesus is indeed the Son of God and only He can help us to free ourselves of our sinful nature – lying, cheating, gossiping, envy, hostility to others, uncaring attitudes, malice, hate and anger. We need to first admit that these faults lie within us and that our lives are not as fruitful as they should be. Some use their tongues as weapons to hurt others, not realizing that in the process they are really hurting themselves. We cannot always see the results of our actions but they come back to hurt us in some form or fashion. If we repent of our wrongdoing by facing the truth, the Lord will take away the problems confronting us. “Be not overcome of evil, but overcome evil with good.” (John 12:21)
