The Skill of Contentment - by Sheldon Bass

“I know what it is to be in need, and I know what it is to have plenty. I have learned the secret of being content in any and every situation, whether well fed or hungry, whether living in plenty or in want.” (Philippians 4:12 NIV)


Complete satisfaction was always just out of reach. A little larger bank account and all would be well. A better place to live. A more attractive lover. An influential friend. Fame. The most comfortable of highs. Always wanting what was believed to bring that elusive contentment. Yet upon each arrival of these, the illusion was extended. Fulfillment was not found. A conclusion was reached. There’s no satisfaction for those who want.

There is a way to contentment. Learned through a close relationship with Jesus. Living water. The bread of life come down from heaven. Perpetual spiritual nourishment. Complete satiation. With the Lord as my shepherd, I shall not want.

The Lord teaches the precious art of contentment to those who surrender to Him. Worth more than all the treasures of earth. Greater than the most beautiful and skilled harem. Better than fame, fortune, worldly position, and fleshly desires never satisfied , is a position of humility in Christ. It leads to honor. He satisfied my want by taking my wants away. He gives new desires, and then fulfills them all.

The things of this world will never satisfy
Surrendered to Christ, the flesh must die.
Sweet contentment is mine to learn
Walking with Jesus—I never more yearn.
