You Are In – by Farhad Chermahini "This is the genealogy of Jesus the Messiah the son of David, the son of Abraham…" (Matthew 1:1 NIV)
As I read the names mentioned in the family tree of Jesus (Matthew 1:16), I asked myself, "Why does God want us to know these people are Jesus’ ancestors?"
Abraham had worshiped idols. Jacob had cheated his father and brother. Judah had gone to prostitutes. David had even murdered his loyal officer. Rehoboam had been proud and self-centered; his actions had divided the nation of Israel. Ahaz had worshiped idols and had murdered innocent citizens. The list of Jesus' ancestors committing horrendous sins goes on.
I believe one answer to my question is that because love covers over a multitude of sins (1 Peter 1:8). Those who were excluded in the old covenant are now included because of the new covenant of love that bore all our sins. God’s love is all inclusive! Mother Teresa said, "Love has a hem to her garment that reaches the very dust. It sweeps the streets and lanes, and because it can, it must." I am so grateful for the long hem of God’s love that swept me off my feet by His kindness, forgiveness, and love. Grace extends his hand of love and acceptance to everyone.
