Throughout the Bible, we are told not to get too attached to earthly things because of their temporal nature. In Leviticus 25:23 when God was giving instructions about the land the Israelites were to possess, he tells them that their earthly inheritance wasn’t permanent, "The land must not be sold permanently, because the land is mine and you reside in my land as foreigners and strangers." Again in 1 Peter 1:17 we are told to "live out your time as foreigners here in reverent fear."

For the Israelites, the danger was that they would place their security in owning land. While for us the danger may be in placing our security in land, houses, possessions, jobs or families. Being rich and famous is also not a pathway to security. Many famous celebrities are very insecure. God knows that feelings of insecurity come from relying on earthly or temporal things. True security comes from relying on Christ. We no longer have to suffer from feelings of shame because God knows us at our worst, yet he accepts us and welcomes us into his family. His acceptance gives us a sense of belonging and worth. When we know that God will not reject us, the world’s opinions are less important. We can feel secure in God.

It’s not God’s intention for us to live a life of insecurity. He wants us to sleep well because we are his children and he loves and cares for us. Jesus is our "sure foundation" (Isaiah 33:6). We find real security in him.

Jesus poured out His blood for the New Covenant of grace and truth, replacing the Old Covenant letter of the law of Moses. Believers are exclusively under the New Covenant, the last will and testament of Jesus that began after the cross.
