The Old Lady – Ken Ebright
“I was hungry, and you gave me food. I was thirsty, and you gave me something to drink. I was alone and away from home, and you invited me into your house. Matthew 25:35.” (NCV)An old woman, with gray hair and in a wheelchair, got on the Metro link (light rail) at the Brentwood Station. She rolled herself into the handicap seat that was right in front of me. She asked a man near the door with earbuds on,” Sir, can you help me? I need help getting off at Civic Center Station.” She pleaded again. The man clearly heard her, but simply stared off into space and ignored her. Then the Lord got a hold of me, and he changed my poor attitude immediately. I realized I was being just like the man with the earbuds. Finally, when I got closer to the stop, I told her that I would help her. I pressed the intercom button and told the train operator that there was a lady that needed extra time getting off the train. Once I wheeled her off, I asked the security guard to help her get onto the correct bus. Then I made sure to watch the guard wheel her up the ramp and onto the bus plaza. The verse mentioned earlier was referring to helping people, all people, at all times. Unfortunately, the selfish, sinful nature that still dwells in our flesh likes to put our needs ahead of others. But as a Christian, when we are confronted with situations like this, we are called to step up help. All this woman wanted was to have some help getting off at her station. Let’s be willing to stop and help at any time, showing the world the love of Christ. Ken is a native Minnesotan and loves to sing and can play a keyboard instrument. Contact |
