When Jesus departed, He left us with a mission. He was talking to all believers. It wasn’t an option. In those last words before His ascension, Jesus personally assigns us to a common goal, His mission to save mankind. A mission can alternately be called an assignment, commission, duty, job, or task. However, in a religious sense, it is defined as a task or purpose for which a person is destined in life; a calling. We are all destined to the mission Jesus gave us. St. Paul reiterates it in Acts 13:47: “For the Lord has commanded us, I have made you a light to the Gentiles, that you may be an instrument of salvation to the ends of the earth.”

Mission is a two-step process. We must first become a mission of the Lord, submitting to His transformation process, to live in genuine discipleship. God created us uniquely, with a special purpose in mind, with talents and gifts to use for the building of His kingdom. We’re called to develop these gifts to fulfill our purpose on earth. 

“For we are His workmanship created in Christ Jesus for good works which God prepared beforehand that we should walk in them.” (Ephesians 2:10) 

When we submit to His personal mission within us, then we are equipped for every good work He prepared beforehand. We are ready to respond to Jesus’ call to “God.” Go, therefore, and make disciples. Become His instrument of salvation. The mission is possible.

Jesus poured out His blood for the New Covenant of grace and truth, replacing the Old Covenant letter of the law of Moses. Believers are exclusively under the New Covenant, the last will and testament of Jesus that began after the cross.
