Whose Child Are You? – Linda SimpsonMy daughter, grandson and I, were in adjacent do it yourself checkouts. My strawberries scanned twice, and an assistant corrected it. The next item was fine, but then, it happened again. We chuckled as the assistant suggested it could be my swiping technique. Just as she finished fixing that error, my daughter and grandson were having similar problems and finding it funny. As the assistant moved to help them, I tapped her on the shoulder and said “Don't worry she's my daughter, it runs in the family.” To which she laughingly joked “Oh no, I'm out here then.” With groceries finally in the bag, we were still smiling as we left.
The next morning, I recalled the checkout incident and wondered “Do people see me as a child of God?” I can tell the checkout assistant Kate is my daughter, but do people interacting with me think “She must be a child of God?” Romans 8:16 states 'God's Spirit joins himself to our spirits to declare that we are God's children.' (NKJV)
Jesus gave us two commandments. To love God above everything else and to love our neighbour as ourselves. We can do this as we are motivated by the love of, and for, our heavenly Father. Eventually, we will be seen to be more like Jesus. Perhaps, we should ask ourselves more often “What would Jesus do?” Then do it. When we love like Jesus would, the Holy Spirit will transform us, and the fruits of the Spirit will be revealed. People will take notice of the difference. In a world where people are worried, complaining and impatient, the difference can be striking and help to lead many to Christ.
Perhaps it's time to see ourselves as our Father sees us, perfected in Christ, and ask “Whose child, am I?”
