Make Me Wise – Susan Ferguson

King Solomon is considered the wisest man who ever lived. His wisdom was evident when two harlots came to him to settle a dispute. Both women had infant sons, and they lived in the same house; while they were sleeping, one of the mothers rolled over on her baby and smothered him. She got up during the night, took the other woman’s son from her side, and replaced him with her son. When the other woman woke up to nurse her baby, she discovered he was dead, but when she examined him in the morning light, she knew he was not her son. King Solomon listened to the women as they argued back and forth, both claiming to be the mother of the living child. The king called for a sword, and it was brought to him.
He then gave an order: “Cut the living child in two and give half to one and half to the other.” The woman whose son was alive was filled with compassion for her son and said to the king, “Please, my lord, give her the living baby! Don't kill him!” But the other said, “Neither I nor you shall have him. Cut him in two!"(1 King 3:25 -26 NIV)
King Solomon ruled that the woman who wanted the baby to live was the birth mother, and he awarded her the child. When the people of Israel heard about the king’s wise verdict, they knew God had gifted him with wisdom to administer justice.
