The Load We Carry – Jennifer Woodley
‘Come to me all you that are weary and are carrying heavy burdens and I will give you rest. For my yoke is easy and my burden is light.’ Matthew 11:28, 30. (NRSV)
Sometimes, life becomes overwhelming, and our burdens are too much to bear. We become weary, and the journey is too difficult to do on our own. So, we must cry out to the One who can lift our load.
Jesus invites us to come to Him. His love is a love that frees us from the burdens that weigh us down. Often, Jesus may show us that the weight we carry is not ours at all. Instead, we have accepted the burdens and responsibilities that belong to another. We have enabled them to walk lightly with no responsibility while we are struggling to carry their load. God never intends us to carry more than we can bear. The load He gives us is easy and light. His ways are gentle and give rest to our soul. God is not a hard taskmaster, but a good and gentle Shepherd who leads us with grace and caring concern.
Could it be that you are carrying a load that you were never designed to carry? If you are, allow Jesus to show you that it is time to lay it down and take up only what He has for you.
Lord give me eyes to see when I have accepted a greater load than you desire. Make me wise to know what tasks are your design for me and what tasks are not. I ask for courage to say yes and no, in Jesus name.
