The Servant’s Heritage – Toni Babcock “Be not overcome of evil, but overcome evil with good.” (Romans 12:21 KJV)
There is so much toxic atmosphere in the air these days, with words being weaponized to destroy or delegitimize another. Browse through almost any comment thread of any political nature and it usually devolves into defamatory remarks and name-calling. Sadly, religious debates can take on a similar tone.
Here’s the great thing about making Jesus the number one hero in your life. You won’t have time for that kind of nonsense. You’ll be too engaged in building up others instead of knocking them down. You’ll be more quick to hear what they are trying to say than opening your mouth against them in judgment. The prophet Isaiah spoke of the coming of Christ and his attitude toward speaking words; “The Lord God hath given me the tongue of the learned, that I should know how to speak a word in season to him that is weary: he wakeneth morning by morning, he wakeneth mine ear to hear as the learned.” (Isaiah 50:4a KJV) This is God’s will for every one of his children. We have the privilege of speaking Jesus’ words. May God give us the grace to speak them wisely.
If people in your life are attacking you with words, here is a wonderful promise: “No weapon that is formed against thee shall prosper; and every tongue that shall rise against thee in judgment thou shalt condemn. This is the heritage of the servants of the LORD, and their righteousness is of me, saith the LORD.” (Isaiah 54:17)
How does this happen? We overcome evil with good, we don’t get even. It’s the Jesus way. Toni M. Babcock is author of The Stone Writer, Christian Fiction for Young Readers and Teens. Contact |
