Take Root in God’s Word - Robert Schaetzle “As therefore you received Christ Jesus the Lord, so live in him, rooted and built up in him and established in the faith, just as you were taught, abounding in thanksgiving.” Colossians 2:6-7 RSV
We grow in what we feed upon, and much of the world around us is not beneficial for our growth and nurturing. This is not to say we should not be informed of events. Nor should we avoid becoming a constructive asset to our family and society. We need to be involved with those in the world to share Christ, that’s why God has us here. But we are not to be of the ways of the world, conforming to this ever-changing world of despair and antagonism.
The word became flesh in Christ, and the word should become who we are, reflecting God’s light in this dark world. To take root in His word is to take root in the truth, Christ himself. He is our sure foundation to keep us steadfast on our journey.
God warns us that temptation can overtake us if we are not rooted in the truth.
“And they have no root in themselves, but endure for a while; then, when tribulation or persecution arises on account of the word, immediately they fall away.” Mark 4:17
Decide to keep your faith and eyes fixed on Jesus and the word and off yourself. Humbly, step aside and let God’s grace flow through you. “For by the grace given to me I bid every one among you not to think of himself more highly than he ought to think, but to think with sober judgment, each according to the measure of faith which God has assigned him.” Romans 12:3
