Free Falling – Jennifer Woodley ‘Trust in the Lord with all your heart, and do not rely on your own insight. In all your ways acknowledge him, and he will make straight your paths.’ Proverbs 3:5-6 (NRSV)
Wouldn’t it be reassuring when danger or difficulties confront us that we could curl up and fall back into the hands of someone greater than us who cares enough to have our protection and best interests at heart?
Perhaps that is why God created the Pebble Toad, found in the Guiana Highlands of Venezuela. In this tiny toad, we find an example of what it means to surrender to a Greater Good. When threatened, the toad folds its limbs under its body, tucks its head in and curls up into a tiny ball. If on an incline, this action causes the toad to roll down a slope, escaping the attention of its predator and looking like a dislodged pebble. The pebble toad quite literally abandons itself to free falling, to escape the presenting danger.
Can we dare to do the same? To abandon ourselves fully into the hands of our Savior who is there to support us whenever troubles come, or the enemy tries to ambush us. Instead of clinging to pride, independence or self-reliance, let’s surrender to our Father whose love and faithfulness towards His children are never-ending.
Father, when difficulties arise, and the enemy seems to be taunting me, thank you that you are there to protect and strengthen me. Help me to trust you deeply and abandon myself and my ways to you. Amen.
