On The Road: Change of Heart Karen Pourbabaee “I will give them a heart with which to understand I am the Lord…” Jeremiah 24:7 NAB
The two disciples, Cleopas and his companion, were on the run, escaping reality. Their Lord and Messiah had been killed, the one who was to redeem Israel, the one in whom they had placed their hope. In despair, they walked the road to Emmaus, away from Jerusalem and the risen Lord. Their hearts were not open to the truth of the resurrected Christ, even though they heard the words of life spoken by Mary and the other women for themselves.
But even on the wrong roads of life, Jesus walks with us. He finds us and gets us to talk with Him. He will ask us questions similar to those he proposed to Cleopas and his friend: What are you thinking? Where are you going? Why are you discouraged and doubtful? He waits to hear our answers. And He waits to show us the real truth by revealing it in the Word. He will give us a heart to understand He is the Lord, that He is near.
Jesus continues the path with the perplexed pair toward Emmaus. They befriended Him and were open to conversation. It was then that He called them fools and “slow of heart” to believe. His remedy is the Word: “Then beginning with Moses and all the prophets, He interpreted to them what referred to Him in all the scriptures.” (Luke 24:27)
Are you listening on this pilgrim journey? Jesus walks with you, and He always has the right Word for you. A Word that reveals who He is. A Word that will change your heart.
