“Believers Pop Quizzes” by Sandra Fischer But in your hearts revere Christ as Lord. Always be prepared to give an answer to everyone who asks you to give the reason for the hope that you have. 1 Peter 3:15 (NIV)
Most students have had teachers who gave “pop” quizzes, those dreaded, unexpected tests to determine if they were absorbing what was taught and able to prove it by passing the tests. In Peter’s first letter to early believers, he forewarned them to expect to have their faith tested by those who wanted to know about the hope they had in Christ.
He knew that their love of Christ would arouse curiosity in non-believers. As true disciples, they would be “quizzed” about why they revere Jesus. He cautioned them to “always be prepared” for such “pop quizzes.” That wise advice hasn’t changed over the years. As followers of Christ, each of us must be prepared to share the gospel with everyone who asks.
How do we prepare for those encounters? By acknowledging the power of the Holy Spirit in Acts 1:8a (NIV): But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes on you; and you will be my witnesses. And, by sharing how Jesus took our sin upon the cross, died, was buried and rose again so that we might have eternal life. Are you ready for “Believers Pop Quizzes” that may come your way? Pray as Paul did, “Whenever I speak, words may be given me so that I will fearlessly make known the mystery of the gospel.” Ephesians 6:19 (NIV). If so prepared, we can ace those “pop quizzes.”
Holy Spirit, help us recall all You have taught us and the courage to share it when asked. Sandra is a Faithwriters Platinum member, author of the book, “Seasons in the Garden.” Contact |
