Better than a High Horse Toni Babcock
"And whosoever shall exalt himself shall be abased; and he that humbleth himself shall be exalted." (Matthew 23:12 KJV)
Have you ever found yourself engaged in a conversation that began innocently enough, but it soon digressed into something judgmental or tarnishing toward another? Perhaps you came upon some ugly gossip and were tempted to throw in your own snarky two cents. Interestingly, some people may think the view from the top of a high horse is wonderful. They can see into everyone else's business and have an answer for everything. What's not to love? I'm kidding of course. Sitting on top of a high horse makes it impossible not to look down on another.
And then there's Jesus. Folks didn't see him riding on a high horse. He walked scarred and dirty roads looking for scarred and dirty sinners. His mission was to save souls, and his scathing rebukes were reserved for hypocrites and self-righteous detractors. Jesus rode into Jerusalem just days before His crucifixion choosing to ride the lowliest beast available - the foal of a donkey.
Followers of Jesus learn to be humble and lowly like Him. They become kind to those who have fallen out of the way. Dying to the self-life, and surrendering to His resurrection power, they grow more and more like Jesus, and begin to understand the meaning of being "seated with Christ in heavenly places." (Ephesians 2:4-7 KJV) It's so much better than looking down on others from the top of a high horse.
