The Devouring Tongue Toni Babcock "Thou lovest all devouring words, O thou deceitful tongue." (Psalm 52:4 KJV)
In this psalm, David describes the deceitful tongue as a "devouring" tongue. A tongue it appears, with an appetite for bringing down its prey. Such is an apt description of the devouring tongue. It is a tongue that speaks devouring words. Diminishing words. Words that take away from people, but never give away anything good. Words that snuff out whatever smoldering hope a soul might dare to entertain.
If you know what it is like to be the victim of a devouring tongue, you also know the importance of not having one yourself; of never allowing your tongue to be hijacked by a spirit of resentment, or jealousy, cruelty, or bitterness, rivalry, ugliness, or evil. If ever you encounter the devouring tongue aimed against you, stand strong in the Lord, and let all your hope and expectation come from God alone. You will not be disappointed. Be assured that words that come from God do not devour His children. His words may discipline us when needed, but His word also empowers our faith and gives us the courage to live according to his will. Contact Toni and find her articles and books. |
