Clinging to Newness Anna Darlene Edmondson
“…from the beginning of the year to the end of the year” (Deut 11:11-12 Amplified).
Embedded in the heart of Christianity stands a living truth ‘God makes all things new’ (Rev 21:1-5). Therefore, He loves new things: songs, hearts, heaven and earth, names, days, etc. Naturally, we enjoy original outfits of clothing or fresh starts after failures. In fact, Jesus became ‘new wine’ of a better covenant and His arrival in the world dawned a joyful (new beginning) between our Father and mankind (Luke 5:36-39)
According to John 3:3, everyone needs new birth “flinging off dirty clothes of the old way of living, to be spiritually re-made, putting on clean fresh clothes of the new life which is God’s design” (Eph 4:22-24 Phillips). The one ‘in Christ’ becomes a completely different person altogether, the past is gone, and everything becomes original---all this is God’s doing (2 Corinth 5:17). What lurks in our yesterdays or what lies ahead tomorrow become insignificant compared to Christ who lives within us. Truly, God (alone) understands who we are and exactly what we need in every situation.
While embracing a New Year brings excitement, it also carries memories of past failures, the guilt of things done, and heartaches over things left undone. However, drawing upon His forgiveness when overwhelmed with self-condemnation brings refreshing hope. Because His compassions never fail and are new every morning, we have stability with lasting peace (Lam 3:22-23). (Apostle) Paul recognized the importance of ‘forgetting and forgiving’ himself for the numerous sins committed against Jesus. Had he not received grace for repentance, he would have lacked the strength to press on, fulfilling God’s high calling (Phil 3:12-16).
Holy Father, thank you for 2017. May we fulfill Your purpose in our lives. Amen.
