Where's the War? Susan Barnes
I see another law at work in me, waging war against the law of my mind and making me a prisoner of the law of sin at work within me. Romans 7:23 NIV
The Contemporary English Version Bible puts it this way, "… in every part of me I discover something fighting against my mind ..."
We read verses like 2 Corinthians 10:4 where it explains that the weapons we fight with are not the weapons of the world. Ephesians 6:12 tells us that our struggle is not against flesh and blood, then exhorts us to put on the full armour of God. So where's the war?
The war is actually a battle for our minds. Every day we have the choice of how we think. 2 Corinthians 10:5 instructs us to take every thought captive. Wrong thinking can be our biggest problem.
Our real enemy the devil is also apt at dropping unwelcome thoughts into our minds and he is such a deceiver that we are tricked into thinking that they are our own thoughts. In 1 Chronicles 21:1 we are told that Satan incited David to take a census of Israel. If David had realized that it was Satan's idea would he have done it? No, David was a man after God's own heart, but on that occasion, he was deceived.
This is why Paul encourages the Philippians (4:8) to think about whatever is true, noble, right, pure, lovely and admirable. We can choose to think in line with God's Word and in line with God's character.
Susan, an Australian pastor's wife, regularly writes devotional thoughts on Bible passages, book reviews and inspirational articles. Contact |
