The Narrators – Toni Babcock
As believers, we must decide which narrative to follow. One hears a voice that says, "Only believe what you can see," when the Spirit says, "Blessed are those who have not seen and yet have believed," (John 20:29b NIV). Another hears, "Own your own power, and pull yourself up," when the voice of the Spirit says, "You would have no power … if it were not given to you from above," (John 19:11 NIV). Yet perhaps the most dangerous for the church is the voice of the spirit of Babel. This is the voice of the pride of life. It says, "Come, let us build ourselves a city, with a tower that reaches to the heavens, so that we may make a name for ourselves; otherwise we will be scattered over the face of the whole earth." (Genesis 11:4 NIV). Believers beware, because whenever name, place, power, or control become bigger in the mind of the people than God, God may decide to come down and confound that people, removing His light so they no longer see the truth. Jesus told his disciples they were not to reign over one another like the kingdoms of this world (Matthew 20:25-26 NIV).
A Christian's life is hidden with Christ in God (Colossians 3:3 NIV). We have an eternal tower built without hands reaching into the heavens. It is not a brick and mortar edifice you can see in this fallen world. "The name of the LORD is a fortified tower; the righteous run to it and are safe," (Proverbs 18:10 NIV). The question is: Have we run into it, and to what and whom are we trusting?
